NCRB Report on Suicide: According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report of the year 2020, during the Corona period in the country, maximum number of people committed suicide and during this time the rate of suicide by hanging has increased to more than 57 percent. During this, a total of more than one and a half lakh people committed suicide across the country, in which more than 10 thousand people were associated with farming.

Highest number of suicides due to family troubles and illness

Interestingly, no farmer suicide was reported in Bihar, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, and Chandigarh. Most of the suicides were due to family troubles and illness. According to the report, there has been a drastic reduction in road accidents and the lowest number of deaths were in road and rail crossing accidents as compared to the last five years. In the year 2020, despite the Corona bandh, 3 lakh 74 thousand 397 people died in these accidents.

According to the NCRB report, in the year 2020, there was an atmosphere of bandh in the country mostly due to Corona period, but more people committed suicide than in the last five years.

  • 1 lakh 31 thousand in the year 2016
  • One lakh 29 thousand years in the year 2017
  • One lakh 34 thousand in the year 2018
  • And in the year 2019, one lakh 39 thousand 123 people committed suicide.

At the same time, in the year 2020, one lakh 53 thousand 52 people committed suicide. This also directly means that there was more tension among the people during the bandh during the Corona period, due to which this percentage increased compared to the last five years.

10 thousand 677 people were associated with farming

According to NCRB data, out of those who committed suicide, 10 thousand 677 people were associated with farming. The number of farmer laborers in this number was 5098. While the number of farmers was 5579. This number is seven percent of the total figure of 1,53,052. Among the farmers who committed suicide, 244 women are also included. It has been said in the report that there were many states where not a single farmer or people associated with him committed suicide. These states are-

  • West Bengal
  • A state in Eastern India
  • Nagaland
  • Tripura
  • Lakshadeep
  • Pondicherry
  • Ladakh
  • Chandigarh
  • and Delhi

According to the report, the highest number of suicides are in five states-

  • 19,909 in Maharashtra
  • 16,883 in Tamil Nadu
  • 13,101 in Madhya Pradesh
  • in West Bengal
  • and 12,259 took place in Karnataka.

The suicides in these five states accounted for 50.1 percent of the total suicides in the country. The report said that among these suicides, the highest number of people died due to family discord (33.6 percent) and illness (18 percent). 6 percent people committed suicide due to intoxication and 5 percent due to marriage dispute. 2.2 percent of people gave their lives due to unemployment and 4.4 percent due to failure in love.

1.2 percent people gave their lives due to problems in professional career. 1.3 percent of people living in government services, while the percentage of suicide among people doing private jobs was 6.6. According to the age of people who committed suicide, people above 30 years and below 45 years of age committed suicide. According to the records, 36,525 people of this age committed suicide in the year 2020.

23.4 percent of educated people committed suicide

It has been told in the report that among those who committed suicide, the percentage of suicides of those who were educated up to matriculation was 23.4 while that of illiterate was 12.6. Whereas four percent such people also committed suicide who were graduate and above. There has also been an increase in the percentage of suicides by hanging and consuming poisonous substances in the year 2020 as compared to the year 2019. Of these, in the year 2019, where 753 people died due to poison, in the year 2020, 883 people died by consuming poison. Whereas 74,629 people died by hanging in the year 2019, while in the year 2020 this figure increased to 88,460. That is, this percentage has increased compared to last year, while suicide by hanging is considered the most painful.

According to the NCRB report, the year 2020 saw the least number of road accidents during the last five years and the biggest reason for this can also be called the Corona period. Despite this, 3,74,397 people died in various road and rail crossing accidents across the country. This figure was 4,21,404 in the year 2019, 4,11,824 in the year 2018, 3,96,584 in the year 2017, 4,18,221 in the year 2016.
